LIVE REVIEW: JONAS BLUE AT O2 ACADEMY NEWCASTLE

Newcastle’s O2 Academy played host to multi-platinum DJ and Producer Jonas Blue and his Blueprint Tour on March 3rd. His debut album ‘Blue’ included collaborations with incredible artists and we couldn’t wait to see what the live show at this iconic venue would have in store!

Opening the show was Goodboys, a trio who last year released their breakthrough hit single with Meduza. They played a full 45 minute set, including Joel Corry’s smash hit ‘Sorry’ and a remix of Lizzo’s ‘Truth Hurts’, pumping up the crowd more and more with every song. They ended with their own track ‘Piece Of Your Heart’ which inevitably got the biggest response from fans and perfectly set the mood for the main event.

Opening his show with Ritual, a collaboration with Tiesto and Rita Ora, Jonas set was off to an explosive start. Jonas fans are are force to be reckoned with - wearing clothes that lit up the room as much as the spectacular light show that was on the stage. A perfect mixture of dance music and pop would be a way to describe Jonas’ music, he has released anthem after anthem over the past few years and his presence is that of a perfect DJ, entertaining and connecting with the crowd throughout the 75 minute set.

Next up on the setlist were well known songs such as ‘Rise’, ‘By My Side’ and ‘Mama’ which have undoubtably been some of Jonas’ biggest hits. Celina Sharma and Aaron Levi provided stunning vocals throughout , replacing the voices of the likes of RAYE and JP Cooper, but they were the perfect fit. His 2017 hit ‘We Can Go Back’ is definitely one of the most underrated in our opinion, but it went down an absolute treat, alongside his less known tunes ‘Wild’ and ‘Wherever You Go’. Celina really showed off her vocal range during ‘What I Like About You’ - even with the set slowing down a little bit for this song, the crowd lapped it up and screamed back every word.

After a mix of the hits, Jonas took a step back from his originals to play a more dance based set for a while - something that would be a perfect fit for one of the many dance festivals coming up this summer. Mixes of Camelphat’s ‘Breathe’ and The Temper Trap’s ‘Sweet Disposition’ accompanied by bursts of Co2 had everyone buzzing. This section ended with Jonas’ own, more dance based tune ‘I Wanna Dance’.

Debut single ‘Fast Car’ was of course on the setlist for the night, followed by ‘Back and Forth’ which also features MK & Becky Hill. His newest release ‘Mistakes’ with Paloma Faith was played next - a song that was released just 5 days prior to the show, but if someone told you that you’d have laughed as his fans knew every single word. We were even treat to double Jonas! - his collaboration on ‘I See Love’ with Joe Jonas which featured on Hotel Transylvania 3 back in 2018.

His encore was made up of 2 absolute hits and couldn’t have went down any better, a mix of two of his biggest tracks ’Polaroid’ and ending with ‘Perfect Strangers’.

All in all, Jonas Blue's 2020 tour was a massive success, hit after hit, mixed with crowd interaction, stunning vocalists, and a club like atmosphere. His fans are loyal, crazy and a mix of all ages and he provided them with a really well put together set which wouldn’t be out of place on an arena (or even bigger) stages.
