Get To Know | RUNN

Los Angeles singer-songwriter RUNN continues to build anticipation toward her debut EP with new single 'Handle With Care'.

The track is a bittersweet admittance of self-doubt that’s balanced with exhilarating melodic touches as RUNN’s breathtaking vocals and intimate lyrics intertwine.

On the topic of her newest single, RUNN explains it

“is essentially a warning label to anyone who I'm close with about the state of my self-doubt and easily bruised ego. It's unapologetically honest, but I think a lot of people can relate to feeling influenced by others opinions, or being too hard on themselves, and I hope it expresses the need for everyone to treat each other a bit kinder, because you don't know what's going on in their head."

RUNN originally made a name for herself within the dance space, collaborating with influential artists ranging from Illenium to Seven Lions while allotting millions of streams in the process. Supported by the likes of Trap Nation and Proximity alongside Spotify’s Mood Booster and Chill Hits to name a few, she’s laid out a deeply-entrenched foundation to set the stage for her profoundly personal solo material.

We got to know her a little better, as well as spoke about the single release and upcoming EP...

Hey, welcome to The Lowdown! How are you doing?

"I’m doing great! Since I’m an introvert I’m thriving in this lockdown for the most part. And it’s given me a lot of time to focus on these new songs and connect with fans!"

Tell us a fun fact about you!

"I used to do trapeze when I was younger! I’ve always loved sports and activities where my feet are off the ground."

Where are you from?

"I grew up in Encinitas CA, which is a little surfing town north of San Diego county. I was always at the beach and in the waves."

When did you know you wanted music to be your career?

"I think I’ve always been made for it, from performing to my family at the dinner table when I was 5, to recording harmonies over songs on the radio in my teens.

I guess I never thought of it as a ‘career’ because it was just always what I did in my spare time. The first song I wrote was in high school demanding my crush say he like me haha!!  Ever since then it was just chasing the passion and it wasn’t really ever about making it a job. I think that’s why I still enjoy it so much."

Have you had a personal highlight or memory that stands out above others?

"I was lucky enough to perform my song 'Demons' with Bear Grillz at Red Rocks last year, and it was so surreal. My second show ever and it was to 10,000 beautiful souls echoing back these intense emotions. It’s going to be hard to top that kind of experience."

If you had to describe your world in 5 words what would you say?

"Deep, Exposed, Honest , Emotional, Pink"

You released your new single ‘Handle With Care’. How has the reaction been so far?

"So far it’s been incredible! I’m so touched by all the comments saying things like ‘this song is me’ or ‘she writes exactly how I’ve always felt’. That’s always been my hope, that my songs echo in people’s hearts in a way that makes them feel seen, validated and not alone." You have a really unique voice and style. Is there anything or anyone that inspires your music?

"I think I’ve drawn a lot of inspiration from so many different artists it’s hard to pinpoint. James Taylor and John Mayer were always my idols when it came to storytelling, Gwen Stefani really inspired me to accept my attitude and quirk as a teen, Sia is a big inspiration when it comes to melodies and how to play with syllables in unexpected ways. I also started off singing in more of a classical/ jazz world so the great emotional singers like Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday really taught me how to capture pain and joy in my tone. "

You have an upcoming debut EP release to look forward to! What can we expect from that?

"I’m so excited for the EP! It’s been such a journey putting it together and finding my solo sound!

It will include the three singles that are coming out ahead of it, 'Better', 'Handle With Care' and 'Misery' (coming out next month) as well as two other songs, which are a little more tender and intimate. They’re all little pieces of my soul and I’m very excited to share them!"

What do you hope to achieve in the next 5 years?

"Gosh, I think I’d like to continue exploring my sound, pushing my boundaries and hopefully have many more EP’s and Albums to share! I’m so thankful for the amazing community of fans who have joined my journey with me, and I’d like to be able to do intimate shows once the world opens back up again!"
