With the release of his new single 'Wolves', we thought it would be a great time to speak to artist Like Lions as part of our Get To Know series...
Hello and welcome to The Lowdown! How are you?
"I'm doing well, still in a qausi-restricted-lockdown situation out here in Washington, so mostly been in studio and hanging at home."
Introduce yourself and tell us a bit about you!
"I'm 31 years old, born and raised in Washington State, my wife Megan and I have lived in the White Center neighborhood of West Seattle since 2014 and I've been operating Two Pines Studio from there since 2017 which is where the bulk of the Like Lions music is written and recorded and where I also do production/engineering work with local artists."
Where are you from?
"Seattle, WA".
How long have you been making music?
"I've been writing and recording music since I was 11, and have been releasing music under the Like Lions moniker since 2011."
What’s your favourite thing to do when you’re not making music?
"Outside the studio I spend most my time hiking around the Northwest with my wife and dogs, listening to history and politics podcasts or reading. Also enjoy a good movie or docu-series."
Are there any artists who have influenced your sound or inspire you?
"Elliott Smith was a huge influence on me as a songwriter during my formative years, since then artists like Bon Iver, Sufjan Stevens, James Blake and Kanye West have all been very influential, especially on my production style."
What would be your dream venue or festival to play?
"The Gorge in central Washington is one of my favorite venues, would love to get over to Europe as well."
What would be your touring essentials if you hit the road soon (after coronavirus of course!)
"Some minimal recording gear, maybe a few books, notebooks for writing, probably a little bit of our Washington State bud (shhh, haha)"
You released a new single titled ‘Wolves’ last month! How has the reaction been so far?
"People have enjoyed it so far, the feedback has been positive for sure. This song was one of the last songs from this project that was written pre-pandemic, at the time (January 2020, a simpler time) a growing military tension had me reminiscing about being in high school and seeing friends who were older graduate and enlist and ended up shipping out to fight and just was trying to convey some of the sentiments I heard from those friends and acquaintances over the years after they came home."
For those who haven’t listened to your music before, how would you describe your sound?
"It's pop music at its core but has some singer-songwriter ethos melodically and lyrically, and its all put together in an electronic and modern sounding package."
Finally, what have you got planned for the rest of this year?
"I have quite a few of singles in collaboration with other artists coming this summer and fall. I also have another Like Lions single coming August 14th called "Hope". All of these Like Lions singles and EP's from 2020 are part of a collection of songs called "Election Season" which are all reflecting on this crazy year we're having. I just released a 65-page coffee table book titled "Election Season: Lyrics & Contemplations", which is a collection of lyrics and short essays and is a companion to this grouping of songs. You can find the book HERE."
